Presentation of the local art projects

The event 6 represented the second round dedicated to the presentation of the local activities implemented locally with the cooperation of citizens and stakeholders. All partners participated in the on-line meeting with people of the coordination group, stakeholders and citizens.

The partners that presented their activities were Amadora Municipality (Portugal) and Ecofellows Tampere (Finland). Partners’ presentations were introduced by the presentation of the project Art4rights with the focus on the CERV programme and the main features of the project.

The presentations followed a same structure:

  • Key data, structure, landscape and heritage
  • Local approach to the implemented art project and description of the project
  • How does the art project answer to the motto “when a space becomes a place”
  • How the art project is linked to the promotion of European values
  • Citizens’ involvement and impact on participants, stakeholders and citizens.

Catarina Valente, presented the art project implemented in Amadora, starting from the situation during the 70s in Portugal when many families suffered important housing problems and the solution found by the government to create a housing programme with the goal to stimulate the dialogue between technical group of architects and citizens’ association. The district in Amadora (Alto do Moinho) was built around the ruins of a windmill and the population felt part of the place demonstrating a constant spirit of participation. Moreover, from an historical point of view, Amadora was  one of the areas with the highest number of windmills in the region surrounding Lisbon and they became a symbol of the city. With the Art4rights project, the windmill at the Alto do Moinho became an artistic installation with the active participation of the community with the population that shares strong ties and represents completely the European values, such as freedom and equality.

Suvi Holm, introduced their art project focusing the attention on the renovation of an accessible hiking trail as a piece of community art.

The art project is linked to the rights in Finland that allows everyone to enjoy freedom and access to nature: this is why the relationship with nature is so important and most people enjoy nature and find there a counterbalance to busy everyday life. The renovation of an accessible hiking trains with “citizens’ benches” as a community art example is essential to encourage more people, including those with disabilities or with limited mobility to explore and enjoy the beauty of the nature along the trail making it more inclusive and accessible for all. This project highlights the  importance of European values such as inclusion, non discrimination and equality.

Discussion and feedback on the art products were chaired by the project and artistic coordinators after the art project presentations.

Presentation of the local art projects

The event 7 represented the second round dedicated to the presentation of the local activities implemented locally with the cooperation of citizens and stakeholders. All partners participated in the on-line meeting with people of the coordination group, stakeholders and citizens.

The partners that presented their activities were the Municipality of Buzet (Croatia) and the Municipality of Imola (Italy).

Dunja Medica and Vanja Fabjiancic, presented the art project implemented in Buzet linked to the renovation of a “space of the town” that was neglected. The transformation of a municipal terrace into a “place” became to reality with the participation of citizens, children from primary and secondary schools, their parents and teachers and local artists. The idea to draw characters of famous children’s literature was chosen because of the proximity of the library to the terrace. The added value of this choice is that each character represents a fundamental principle or value of the European Charter such as for Hlapic tale, from the Croatian literature, that teaches dignity and how to stand up for the life that is imposed on him. The space in this way becomes a recognizable place for every resident in Buzet increasing the sense of ownership towards the EU.

The last presentation was introduced by the representative of Imola municipality, Annalisa Cattani, who introduced three activities linked to art projects to promote the sense of freedom, dignity and equal opportunities that the historical movement of Italian “resistenza” developed during the second world war. Different arts have been involved such as music, drawings and installation made by textiles.

Discussion and feedback on the art products were chaired by the project and artistic coordinators after the art project presentations.
